1. Link popularity can have a great bearing on some of the major search engines. Create quality links to your site from related sites - preferably with a Google page rank of 3 or above. There are some free programs readily available on the web where you can check your link popularity status on the major search engines and track your progress. 2. Create Title, Keyword and Description meta tags for each of your pages. Make sure you don't have duplicate Title meta tags on your other pages as some search engines will penalize you for this. Meta tags are important as some search engines still use the contents of the keywords and description meta tags to determine the content of the page. Once you have created your meta tags, try searching for a meta tag analyzer to check you have set them up correctly and for help optimizing them. 3. One of the most important tips for search engine optimization is to have good unique content for your site. Make sure your keywords are specific and relevant to your site's content so as to drive targetted traffic to your site. 4. Create a Blog - not only will this naturally attract the search engines, it should also attract re-occuring visitors. 5. Do NOT create mirror sites - this could cause your site to be removed from the search engines completely. 6. Submit your sites regularily to the search engines and update your content as often as possible. 7. Create page names that include your keywords, i.e. if your keyword is 'fishing tackle', suggest create a page http://www.yourdomain.com/fishing_tackle.htm. 8. Create ALT tags for your graphics. It is believed that search engines look at the ALT tags when determining relevancy. 9. Create a site map to help both visitors and search engine spiders navigate your site. 10. Check your site for broken links. Broken links can lower your ranking. You will find programs readily available on the web that will check your site for broken links.
